Stabbings in St-Michel
A teenager and a man were meeting in St‑Michel ostensibly over the Facebook Marketplace sale of a phone. The kid stole the phone and stabbed the man, but he also got stabbed in the ensuing fracas. Nobody died, but it was a close thing for the kid.

I haven’t used one as I’ve only bought one thing like this, for three dollars, but the SPVM have rooms with cameras where you can exchange goods, which would hopefully decrease the chance of something like this happening.

I’ve twice bought things in this way, both times agreeing to meet at mutually convenient cafés, and it’s been fine both times.
But I remember two incidents in my neighbourhood a couple of years ago, where people selling phones outside Jarry metro – a busy spot with lots of foot traffic – were slashed in the neck by an assailant. A suspect was arrested not long afterwards and nothing like this has happened again in the area, but it’s a reminder that it’s best to stay safe when exchanging goods and money with strangers.
