Landlords are hiking rents in Park Extension as much as 20%, citing repairs made necessary by sudden city demands over safety and security.

Would they not have had the buildings inspected before buying them? They must have been aware that repairs and renovations would be needed and could not readily be gouged out of the tenants.

Doesn’t matter, the rules are that any reno – even necesssary upkeep – counts toward rent increases. If anything, it means the previosu landlord was getting away with rent increases for nothing.

My landlord on the other hand won’t allow us to even do minor repairs, and you had best believe that every single repair he does counts toward our annual rent increase. Even when he repaints the fence he charges it to the building.

The number of homeless people in Quebec continues to rise, Montreal in a sad position at #1, but the regions also seeing an increase. The figures are based on a count made a year ago, which as always, is qualified as the “visible homeless” who can more readily be identified and counted.

Noting this TVA item on arson at a Longueuil sex shop mostly for how the journalist not only names the business, but TVA hangs it up there in the headline.

I’ve noted before how incidents like arsons or shootings (at the storefront, not at people) tend to be reported discreetly as “a café in St‑Léonard”, “a bar in Lasalle” and so on, although media sometimes get around this by using a photo that reveals the frontage or the address.

But not this time. 50 Nuances de Sexxx gets namechecked, and how.

Very TVA/JdM thing to do. Thanks for calling out this difference!

After some uncertainty, it seems the river ferries will be back this season – at least, some of them. The funding is still unclear.

After a lot of fuss, Quebec has accorded $300 million toward drastically needed renovations at Maisonneuve‑Rosemont Hospital. Radio‑Canada says the full site project will cost around $5 billion.

A law made last year that short‑term rentals aren’t allowed till June means no one can rent out their Airbnb during the Grand Prix. The big weekend is in May this year.

When you go to the website and choose those dates in Montreal, Airbnb now blocks illegal listings. NOT!

How is RQ can’t manage to hand out the punitive fines when the perpetrators freely advertise themselves???

I bet it isn’t even that. I think it’s more to do with keeping options open for tourists, seeing as tourism has become a fundamental part of the economy.
