CBC on the bike path fight in Park Ex
CBC analyzes the bike path struggle in Park Ex. One expert is quoted as saying that one of the tough issues facing politicians now is “how to implement environmental sustainability without further harming working-class people.”

If environmental sustainability could be achieved without any negative impacts (to the poor or anyone else), it would have been done already. It’s exactly because it *can’t* that it *hasn’t*!
I lament how articles like this repeat over and over the “250 parking spaces” figure, but don’t give any context. 250 out of how many? Many of the people quoted are acting like every last parking space in the borough is being removed.

The automobile lobby (industry and addicts) uses many human shields – disabled, families, old people, etc. in its social media propaganda.
Here, they are using “working class” as their surrogate victims. This narrative suggests that the working class absolutely must continue to drive large pickups and SUVs, while only the rich and privileged can afford to get around on rusty old bicycles, mass transit, and bixis.
Social media is using similar propaganda tactics as commercial media does. Victim narratives like the one above are much stronger than “we wanna keep driving!” narratives would, so they are constantly pitching victims at public media.

Interesting they note that the pro-path protestors are mostly white. I thought everyone here was telling me that most bicyclists in Parc Ex were racialized.

P.s. the CBC is the automobile lobby now? C’mon qatzi, you can troll better than that.

There isn’t necessarily a contradiction there. The “pro-path protesters” and the “bicyclists of Parc Ex” are not necessarily the same group. The protesters could be from out of borough, the local cyclists maybe aren’t into protesting, etc.

@Ian: ” the CBC is the automobile lobby now? ”
CBC took in 400 million dollars in advertising revenue last year, and car companies are one of the biggest “donors” across all advertising platforms.
Money buys “opinions” in our media environment.
