Only refuge in the West Island is hot potato
There’s only one homeless shelter in the West Island and many people don’t want it there even though most of the residents are older and quiet, and the point is valid that it holds back the creation of tent cities in the area.

“residents complained centre clients were going through their recycling bins for cans”
I don’t have enough cans or plastic bottles for it to be worth it for me, so I try to make those easier to get out of my recycling, who cares if they take your cans? That’s just looking for issues.

Also too: when you throw your recycling bag to the curb you are *literally* turning it into trash – you are actively removing it from your life. But if somebody else can get something out of it, you want it back? Such a crazy but very common occurrence.

The only issue is when pickers untie recycling bags, don’t tie them back up, then wind picks up and strews rejecta along the street. It doesn’t happen often around here, but often enough to give some people reason to complain.
I don’t often have redeemable cans or bottles but when I do, I put them in a small separate bag so they can be picked up. They always are.
