What’s open and closed for Thanksgiving? A nice mini infographic from Le Devoir.

The Gazette’s Michelle Lalonde looks at three projects the city is working on to give Montrealers better access to the river. Her analysis of the Lachine marina is worth reading, as it clarifies how much the city has already spent to maintain it for a relatively small number of boat owners, and how much more needs to be invested. The decision that if millions are to be spent it should be invested in a project to benefit a wider public seems obvious, but the boat owners are going to court in an attempt to stop the conversion.

Speaking of improving access to the river, another project that we have heard whispers about for years which i want an update about is the next phase of the Autoroute bonaventure.
There have been discussions about re configuring the highway into a avenue, or even removing it and enlarging Rue Marc Cantin. The idea would be to turn the waterfront there into a brand new park, which would be much more accessible to a lot of Montrealers. Especially if they go through with adding a REM station after the soil remediation of the technopark is complete and new projects get built there.

I went for a bike ride up to the Île de la Visitation a couple of weeks ago and it occurred to me that there are plenty of spots along the Back River that would be ideal for swimming. In fact there were some popular beaches along it in the past, but they’ve all disappeared. I wonder why there isn’t more discussion of reopening access. Is the water quality poor? Would it disturb nearby residents?
Ian
I suspect it’s more that if there was swimming allowed they would need to provide beach maintenance and lifeguards or risk lawsuits. We got bike paths instead, it’s a limited budget.

La Presse looks into the situation in Montreal North, where over the last year there have been more and more incidents involving firearms, so that peaceful residents have begun to fear that a stray bullet could kill a random passerby. Bottom line, the place is full of restless young guys with no life plans and nothing to do but rumble.

The Journal de Montréal building on Frontenac was the target of an attempted arson early Saturday, but very little damage was done. A large moribund potted plant is in two of the photos and I can’t figure out how it was involved.
Chris
The window look broken. Maybe the sturdy-looking plant container was thrown through to open the window?
nau
Yeah, but given the type of plant and where it and the glass is, it looks like it was thrown from the inside, which would be odd for an arson attempt. I suppose maybe it could have been grabbed from a dumpster and used to smash the window but not thrown through.
Kate
nau, that’s what I thought. It’s not a plant in an outdoor style pot. In fact, it looks like a plant that might have died inside an office since the pandemic.
nau
That type of plant definitely strikes me as an indoor plant. Searching online, it looks a lot like Sanseveria trifasciata, which is a low-maintenance plant suited for offices. You have to like the idea of an arsonist so ill-prepared they have to grab a plant from a dumpster to smash the window, but maybe it makes more sense than running away with a hammer in your pocket.

A man aged 87 was stabbed in Anjou Friday night in his house, and a teenager has been arrested.
Update: Radio news says the man has died and TVA makes it the 20th homicide of the year in Montreal.

Hi,
Do you know the names of the victims or the exact address. We are sick with worry. Our fiends live right by there and they are not answering their phones

There’s a bit more information about the couple here, but no names yet. I hope your friends are OK.

Thank you. Please let us know if you have any further updates…

Ms Dutra, you should understand, I summarize the news, I don’t collect it directly. The police don’t send me their publicity handouts. If I see anything further about this story in the news media I will post about it, but I’m not a reporter and if the media lose interest in the story then I won’t know any more than we do now.

From the picture in the TVA article, the address appears to be 11175 rue Verville. That house is owned by a Denis Gilbert. I may be wrong, but that’s what it looks like. I hope that helps!

Seems like the house was for sale. https://duproprio.com/en/montreal/ahuntsic-cartierville/bungalow-for-sale/hab-11175-rue-verville-929003

You guys wanna start a detective agency with me?

House is/was owned by Denis Gilbert and Sylvie Favron. But just because they own it, doesn’t mean they were living in it. The could have been renting it out, having other family members live there, etc.

No news from Susana. I hope she’s okay.
Kate, you don’t think you were a bit harsh with her?

No, I don’t think I was harsh with her.

Denis Gilbert and Sylvie Favron were a couple and they have both passed away in this tragic accident. I just got informed by ex collegue that it was them unfortunately.

Yes that is correct, the address is 11175 Rue Verville. I got it from a good source that it was a murder/suicide. So sad for the families involved. And bad karma for that neighborhood ….a few “events” have happened in Ahuntsic these last few years.

Je connaissais un peu le couple qui habitait au 11175. C’est très triste pour les 2 familles impliquées. Que Dieu ait leurs âmes.
