CTV has a scathing open letter on Quebec’s approach to Covid, signed by a list of experts in the field.

It seems obvious that the CAQ is minimizing information and discussion about Covid so gloomy talk doesn’t blight their chances in the October election. Even though it’s a foregone conclusion the CAQ will be re‑elected, François Legault wants to make sure we don’t know the facts and can pretend the pandemic is over and everything is sunshine and lollipops again.

Update: Public health is going to give a presser on the 7th wave on Thursday afternoon.

I just have to add that more people I know have Covid right now – people I know in person here in town, and people I know online – than at any other time in the pandemic. It’s showing up particularly in people who’ve recently travelled, but not only them.

I’ve read similar open letters of medical professionals in other countries, so it’s not just a CAQ re-election thing. Politicians are supposed to keep the population safe, but the population is tired of Covid, and of Covid measures. Keeping the economy going and inflation at bay are seen as more important everywhere in the world. A few thousand deaths for each wave in every country are the cost of doing business. (Relative to population size there are a lot more deaths in Quebec than elsewhere, even though our reported number of cases is low, but that just tells something about the overall health of the population and the quality of, and the strain on, the healthcare system.)

        André Picard tweeted:

“BA.5 will bring a wave of new infections—and a wave of reinfections, too.
@edyong209 reports on what the variant means, and what to do about it.”

Now that Maurice ‘Mom’ Boucher is dead, journalists are looking back at his life. Global talks to crime writer Julian Sher about Boucher’s ‘wave of terror’. Maria Mourani has a very brief piece in the Journal about the formation of gangs and how Boucher came to dominate them, and in La Presse, Yves Boisvert reminds us that, although Boucher’s dead, the Hells are still thriving. Radio-Canada considers Boucher’s blacklist of people he hoped to have bumped off, including onetime police chief Jacques Duchesneau, PQ public safety minister Serge Ménard, and crime writer Michel Auger, since deceased.

Afterthought: At one time, who would’ve bet on Mom Boucher and Vito Rizzuto both dying of natural causes?

The brief heat wave we had in May was surprisingly dangerous, with more than 150 deaths in Quebec seemingly attributable to it, and not to any other factors.
