After four technical failures in as many days, Quebec is telling the REM to shape up.

Update: Now CDPQ-Infra says it won’t be able to construct the South Shore section of the REM that was supposed to trace along Taschereau Boulevard.

I feel like this is akin to ignoring your children’s annoying and habit-forming self-indulgences until they turn 18 and then yelling at them to shape up or ship out.

More of a golem of Prague scenario than bad parenting IMO but yeah, talk about blame-shifting.

Honestly, Taschereau is so wide! They should just build a separated tramway the whole distance. 1 driver for 4 to 5 rail cars and protected lanes and maybe synchronized lights to the tram. The only place it would be more limited is the section/overpass over the 116

REM`s profit goals were never about transportation, but about land development. The Taschereau Boulevard REM can`t happen because they don’t own any of the ajecent empty fields to engage in land development (their are no empty fields around Taschereau).

The big lots along taschereau are between Rome Blvd and La Prairie. It’s all strip malls and car dealerships. They could develop the land, but they wouldn’t get the same bang for the buck as with the Du Quartier condo city in the middle of nowhere Brossard (aka super cheap land compared to lots on Taschereau). Hopefully someone else will build a European type tram to service taschereau and the rest of the south shore…. Hahaha who am I kidding?

Frankly, I think Trashereau is a lost cause for trams or REM. It’s already set up with bus lanes, which serves the commuters who live along there. But few people would use a tram or REM to go to that street for shopping. Things are just too spread out. Even getting from a bus stop to a shop involves a long and cold walk across multiple parking lots. If you’re making multiple stops it would be agonizingly slow and inefficient.

I go there about once a week for groceries. In my case the two stores I frequent are quite close together, but that’s not the case for everyone. Plus there are a couple of places that I sometimes go to that are not walking distance apart, so it would involve multiple stops while lugging heavy bags of stuff across all those parking lots and all that waiting.

Currently I can get there and back, with shopping, in under an hour by car; a bit more if I make an extra stop or two. That would be a three hour excursion by tram, and would involve an awful lot of walking, which would make my Fitbit happy but not my back.

The city has put up a real‑time road construction map, Entraves et Fermetures. You have to zoom in to see all the little cone icons.

It’s a nice start but it’s only based on permits so doesn’t reflect current closures or what the effects of the work are on sidewalks and streets except whatever was submitted for the permit

Five people in a car were injured in a hit‑and‑run in Lasalle on Sunday evening when a car plowed into their SUV. The driver fled on foot, so the cops have the vehicle and ought to know who he is.

      Unless the car was stolen

    • Kate 13:55 on 2024-01-29 Permalink

      Good point.

A non-trivial number of people try to do this exact thing then report their cars as stolen.
