Quebec wants a deal with Canada where it only has to take asylum seekers who speak French. And it wants to invite non‑French‑speaking asylum seekers to leave Quebec although they’re not going so far as to suggest they should be forced out – not yet.

Yeah just push them across the border into Ontario…. Until we need them to work on farms in the summer. Then it’s okay for them to temporarily come back lol

The Rendez-Vous Québec Cinéma festival, a week away from its opening, has found it can’t use the Imperial Cinema for its opening and closing films since Quebecor announced it was ending its support of the old cinema at the end of January.

The homeless facility at Hôtel‑Dieu that opened early in the pandemic and currently shelters nearly 200 people has been told it has to find a new location by the end of March. This CTV piece mostly focuses on how Ensemble is kvetching about it.

Even if the CHUM is handing the building over to the CIUSSS du Centre‑Sud, can’t the government order them to keep the shelter open?

Media are reporting a multiple stabbing in Vaudreuil‑Dorion, CBC mentioning a major police operation and five ambulances dispatched to the incident.

There has been an arrest, but as of 3 pm, little has been reported about the incident.

At the 4:30 news, they’re saying two people have died.

Later, La Presse reports how the suspect was recently accused of assaulting a different woman and TVA tells about his violent past and psychiatric troubles.

Friday, Fabio Puglisi is accused of killing two women, including his mother.

Philippe Krivicky, who till a couple of weeks ago was deputy general manager responsible for economic development and real estate strategy with the city, has gone to work for Carbonleo.

In a housing crisis, it seems real estate news is the real news.

              A real profile in courage.

Worth noting that he was working for Cogir before being hired by the city in 2022. From the article:

« Mon rôle au sein de l’administration municipale sera celui de pivot, de point de contact pour activer les connexions entre le monde des affaires et le monde municipal. Je crois qu’on peut bâtir des ponts », avait expliqué Philippe Krivicky à La Presse à la même époque. Son arrivée représentait « une volonté de rapprochement » avec la communauté des affaires, avait-il ajouté.

That sounds awfully ambiguous. Is it too much to ask what the fruits of his labour were? Housing starts were down 37% in 2023 compared to 2022. That’s a much sharper decline than in other Canadian cities.

Carbonleo is responsible for the Royalmount project….OK…..he’s been with the city since Oct 2022 so nothing fishy there?

I suppose you could argue that the citizens of Montreal are better off if there’s someone at City Hall who can be some kind of link/interface/conduit for the needs of both the city and developers when it comes to solving the housing crisis. Hiring an ambitious guy mid-career, though, seems like a recipe for disaster – you want someone who is at the end of their private sector life, who has relationships and know-how and sees civic participation as a way to put a cap on their career, not someone who is going to take his city experience and sell it off to the highest bidder.

@MtlWeb Royalmount is in TMR, Montreal has nothing to do with it (unfortunately).

La Presse has a dossier Thursday about a certain landlord, often before the tribunal, and how he funds his acquisitions.

Reading through my tabs I also find this man has convinced some reporters that his intentions are utterly benevolent toward the special needs community and the arts community.

Put those stories together and it’s a bit dizzying.

(If you’re commenting, please do not spell out this man’s name on my blog. I can’t afford a lawyer.)

Friday morning, another story about the same man.
