The BAnQ has a piece about the Expos, who played their last game here 20 years ago, surveying the final headlines about that game. A glance at the Gazette of the day would seem relevant, but it doesn’t feature.

CBC talked to some elderly fans and took note of the death of Pete Rose, who played for the team briefly.

A polyamorous couple spent a week in Montreal and counts up what it cost them.

Some of the prices are surprising.

“We left for the pint-sized Cote Bar a Cafe and I got a chocolate chip cookie and a sparkling hibiscus drink for CA$12.57 ($9.21).”

I’ve been there a few times and don’t recall it being that expensive. Maybe the author was tipping 20% for everything, even counter service, as so many Americans do?

Not sure why it needed to be mentioned that they were polyamorous – it was just 2 people, who cares who else they spend their lives with back in their home town – had no influence on the cost of their visit, as far as I can tell

Some polyamorous people are like some vegans…

      • Meezly 14:53 on 2024-10-01 Permalink

The writer visited Montreal with their partner while the husband dropped them off and picked them up at the airport after their trip. Obvs there’s still a need to normalize polyamory! However, what really matters is that they were $400+ under-budget!

      • Blork 15:46 on 2024-10-01 Permalink

It seems more like the veganesque need to overshare. Lines like: “Then we split up so my partner could get a massage (I was invited but being touched by strangers stresses me out, which negates the purpose of a massage).” Why do we need to know that? It’s an article in a web magazine, not a personal blog post or an email to your besties.

Yeah that kind of oversharing is annoying but on the whole this travel diary sounds like a pretty boring way to take a vacation. Yes, it’s good to stay within your means and stick to a budget, but turning your holiday into a laundry list of receipts makes for some pretty dull reading. This article strikes me as something an AI would write – brochure-worthy descriptions of menu items, exhibits, and minutiae + a to-the-penny summing-up of money spent. All well and good but, like, live a little.

…and we can be pretty sure she didn’t do much else or she would have told us about it. 🙂

Yes, I was expecting some anecdote where her polyness would have relevance to the visit, otherwise why mention it? But…

What kind of swingers go from Minnesota to Montreal for a short holiday and spend all their time and money buying mid-rate olive bread?

A young man who was a minor when he killed Jannai Dopwell-Bailey in 2021 has been sentenced to six years – but it’s minus a reduced credit of 12 months for time already served, so he will serve two years in custody and three years under conditional supervision in the community. Dopwell‑Bailey’s mother is not satisfied.

In June, the adult who was also convicted in the murder was sentenced to life with no chance of parole before 13 years.

St-Laurent MNA Marwah Rizqy has announced she won’t run again in the next provincial election. She has two kids, her husband is also an MNA, and she wants to be a stay‑at‑home mom for awhile.

The bus loop intended to resume under the new building at Rosemont metro station has been delayed for almost a year after the building was completed, but it reopened Monday. I find it odd they never thought about ice maybe falling off the new building till it was done, then they had to find a way to not let that happen.

          • DeWolf 10:38 on 2024-10-01 Permalink

That’s the official excuse but the building’s original design already included a canopy with netting to catch anything falling down. Apparently the real reason was some kind of weird bureaucratic back-and-forth between the STM and various other public agencies involved in the construction of this complex.

            That is so not-surprising. Thanks.

A pro-Palestine demonstration downtown Monday Sunday evening culminated in a Molotov cocktail thrown at police, and windows broken at Concordia.

Sunday evening. All the front windows of the Hall building on De Maisonneuve were broken and students, staff and faculty arrived Monday morning to see danger tape, smashed windows, and threatening graffiti. The graffiti has been removed, mostly, and the windows are now covered in plywood.

McGill is threatening to cancel the semester for law students on Tuesday, as the faculty strike continues. (I’m hearing that may be settled in a last‑minute deal; more later.)

Update: The professors are back at work.
