Judge stops 1000 charges against Catania
A judge has stopped nearly a thousand charges against Paolo Catania and other people involved in the old Construction Frank Catania firm. The basis was the Jordan ruling against undue delay in going to trial.

An absolute travesty. You can’t tell where the incompetence ends and the corruption begins.

Le Devoir has a good piece Saturday on how this situation arose: crown prosecutors obstructed the defense until the rule against delays applied.

You think maybe there were people in positions of power who didn’t want a full and frank airing of the details in some of those cases?

I don’t know, dwgs. There have been ridiculous delays getting some of these Charbonneau commission-related cases to trial, but then any trial involving nearly a thousand charges has to be a paperwork nightmare and a monster to prosecute. Can’t imagine what it feels like for a Crown prosecutor who’s spent a couple of years familiarizing themselves with the details of a case like this only to be told it’s off.

Yeah, I’m not saying for sure there was but you have to think that with enough will things would have been prioritized and pushed through.
