SNL sketch will linger
Even if you don’t watch TV, if you’re on any form of social media you’ll have heard by now that Saturday Night Live did a sketch about Montreal TV news. Here’s the Youtube clip.
It has a few mild sallies but isn’t what I’d call comedy for the ages.

Probably the only SNL shoutout Longueuil will ever get.

Bowen Yang apparently lived in Montreal forces years as a kid.
Though, maybe that’s “fake news” and a reference to Kamala Harris. Everyone now wants to have gone to school in Montreal.

Some of the jokes are really dated, like the smoking-everywhere-bit, but Jean-Fred made me chuckle. That effect on the video to avoid YouTube’s automatic copyright infringement detector makes me feel like I’m on acid.

Oh, is that why the framing was so bizarre? I couldn’t make out if that was a joke I wasn’t getting.

Yeah I’m pretty sure that’s what’s happening there. Sometimes you’ll see the video slowed down or sped up a tiny bit, or the framing is just a bit weird, for the same reason.

They actually called the show “BonjourHi!”. Simon Jolin-Barette va être en tabarnak!
Also, don’t mess with Montreal bagels. They are so much better than NYC bagels, which are basically less sweet donuts.

Bowen Yang lived here from ages 5 to 9, AFAIK, which isn’t much to establish anything. But I’m guessing he has friends and/or family here and visits frequently, which would explain why he’s the only one in the skit who comes close to getting the accent right. The “Scharts Cavern” bumper at the beginning was probably the funniest thing.

The framing is off because it’s been edited to avoid being taken down on YouTube by an NBC copyright claim. Watch it on global website to see it without any crazy zooms.

Got a link, Lenny? I never can see the SNL clips because they’re blocked here, and I can’t be bothered to power up a VPN for just that.

I thought the prop bagels were hilarious. I remember being borderline disgusted by the appearance of Montreal bagels when I first arrived. It took me years to try one. You just know that sometime last week a traditional NY bagel shop was shown photos of Montreal bagels and asked to make some for the skit. They must have been horrified.
