Chantal Guy on a composer who’s going to integrate into a new work the five huge bells taken down from the belfry of Sacré-Cœur-de-Jésus church on Ontario Street. Like other churches in town, the Sacré-Cœur’s bell tower is too decrepit to keep or ring bells there any more.

Online discussions are to start on Wednesday about the 25‑storey office tower planned to loom over the Bay store on Ste-Catherine, parts of which date back to 1891.

And…that developer is beating a dead horse. There’s no way they can lease those planned office spaces. Commercial R/E is in for a comprehensive re-think post-covid.

Two young men who set fire to a restaurant in Anjou on April 22 are being sought by police. The video makes them look like modern ninjas.

The trend toward working from home is going to reduce the expected ridership of the REM by 10%, according to this item, although I wouldn’t be surprised if the dip was deeper than that.

Here’s a worthwhile account out of America, though I’ll note that pretty much all media reports contain the inherent bias of reporters who want – and in many cases already have – the sort of flexibility they claim the public is clamoring for. https://slate.com/business/2021/04/remote-work-future-office-downtowns.html
Two more points: Canadian bosses and workplaces generally are quite different that those in the US, bother culturally, and by dint of the US’ much larger proportion of workers who can work remotely without productivity or organizational effectiveness loss. Also, even in relatively higher wage professions, they want us back in the office asap, because the office itself is a selling point for clients. You’ll see this for everything from engineering, legal, and financial services to any smaller shop hosting clients.

The sanitary curfew will be pushed back to 9:30 pm as of Monday, May 3.

I have not seen it described as a “Sanitary Curfew” before. I like it. Kind of old-timey. Makes you imagine that they are steam-cleaning the streets while we are inside.

The CBC talks to people working in the ICU at the Jewish about their Covid patients: they’re still caring for people in denial that Covid exists. “It’s awkward because it’s hard to treat them,” says one doctor.
The Olympic stadium vaccination site may be disrupted Saturday by a big anti-Covid-measures demonstration.
Blork
That would be absurdly counterproductive, to the point of self satire. Does stupidity have no bounds?
YUL514
Blork, the junk I read on Facebook from both acquaintances and non acquaintances is beyond stupidity, then there’s the dung I hear from other people in person. I just don’t know what to say anymore. A year in and they still think there’s some grand “plan” from the big bad boogeyman. I’ve said it many times, the last thing the government wants is for people sitting at home not working and not paying there taxes.
Ephraim
@Blork – I had a friend block me, simply because she kept on quoting the adverse effects of COVID and claiming that x people per million were dying from vaccinations. I asked her which was preferable, x dead per million or her country’s 900 per million dead from COVID-19. And that was what got me blocked. (And her country has a vaccination averse reaction fund!)

CTV has a good critical piece by an epidemiologist about Quebec’s fatal neglect of indoor ventilation in fighting Covid transmission in workplaces and schools.
Raymond Lutz
Yup, well written but weak on hard numbers: in covid time, HVAC systems must put in fresh air (ie non-recirculated) at a rate of 7-10 l/s per person. It’s almost impossible to heat/cool that volume in current installations so people will have to cover up (when cooler outside) and no A/C this summer… sources
Kate
Thanks for the sources, Raymond Lutz.
Meezly
He’s also recommending the best way to save summer for everyone is to
“return to more restrictive measures in enclosed places for a period of four to six weeks must be a priority, although the value of a strict curfew is debatable, particularly regarding outdoor activities….now is the time to recognize the necessity of closing schools until the end of the school year.
It’s basically pay now or pay later. It’s better to pay now and the sooner the better. The cost of paying later may be much more painful.”
It’s highly doubtful the CAQ will do this unless things get really bad, which is part of their reactive playbook anyway.
