Borough mayor’s response criticized
This week, a polite question by a young resident in a borough council session in Anjou (video on Twitter) received a harsh response from borough mayor Luis Miranda which has attracted criticism. Nor did Miranda even address the issue, but reprimanded the lad for having the temerity to bring a question to council at the age of 15. Thoughts from Patrick Lagacé.

Miranda deserves the flack he’s getting for that – dismissive to a young citizen and impolitic to boot. I hope a crowd of teenagers shows up and grills him in the next few weeks. We want more young people interested in politics not fewer. Grrr.

This guy is a regressive prick, and has been for at least as long as I’ve lived in Anjou (but most likely longer). If I had teenaged kids, I would encourage them to take part in improving their borough and probably push them a little to go speak at the next borough council session.
A little context, his Wikipedia page states he began being active in his borough’s community life by joining many associations, all this at the young age of about 20:

He wasn’t much older than the boy in that video. Maybe he should be reminded of when he was young and wanting to effect change. Or maybe, after over 30 years, it’s time for him to retire from politics and let someone younger take over.

Others don’t get to “take over”, they have to beat him at the election ballot. No need for him to retire, “some younger” just needs to actually run and convince the people they’re better.

It will be a couple of years before the next municipal election. By then, Hocine Ouendi should be old enough to run for office.

Regardless of age, he is a citizen and has a right to ask a question.

I totally agree, Ephraim.

By “letting someone younger take over”, I mean that this incident, among others, should convince people to vote for someone other than this asshole. We’ll see at the next election.

Watching that video reminded me of council meetings I attended presided by Luc Ferrandez. Miranda is clearly past his sell-by date, but let’s not assume that power only corrupts those we disagree with.

dhomas, ah, I see. Well, I too hope he’s voted out. But I don’t care about his replacement’s age (or any other attribute), only his policies.
