The STM plans a public session later this month on the extension of the SRB Pie‑IX down to Notre‑Dame. The work will take till 2027.

I know it’s an integrated project including a street redesign, not just a BRT extension, but it’s still wild that the STM takes as much time to build a small-ish BRT line than it takes CDPQi to build +60 km of metro.

They’re not just putting in lane markers, but also digging up and modernizing all the sewers and pipes and cables under the roadbed.

Yeah, it’s the underground work that takes years, not the surface-level stuff. Five years seems like a long time even for that, though. They might be doing it in stages – when it’s finished next month, Pine Avenue will have taken three years for a similar reconstruction, but that involved two distinct phases with minimal overlap.

A new phase of work on Ste‑Catherine Street is starting Monday mostly between Peel and Mansfield. Sewer pipes and water mains will be replaced; merchants are worried about a worksite that will last for two years.

That’s a small stretch of road – about 1/3 the size of the last portion done, no? The future sites are much bigger. I wonder why this piece is so small. Maybe the work is very complex?

From what I’ve heard, the timeline has been stretched out because of soaring construction costs. Peel was supposed to be redone this year but it’s been bumped back to 2026.

Who knows when the whole project will be done, all the way to Atwater. 2030?

A tow truck knocked down two seniors in TMR late Monday morning. As is usual in these stories they were hit when the truck was on the turn. The pair are in critical condition.

Update: CBC radio news says the woman has died, the man remains in critical condition.

La Presse’s Silvia Galipeau has an interesting interview with Mindy Pollak, the first Hasidic woman elected to office in the city.

Very interesting indeed. I must admit that a lot of my notions of the position of women in Hasid society is based on TV series and movies. It’s obviously much more nuanced and complicated. I hope she can (continue to) build bridges. I liked the analogy between the francophones and the Hasid, both surrounded by a sea of ‘others’ that want to destroy their culture.

Do others want to destroy Quebec francophone culture?

There’s an absolute ton of francophobia in English Canada. Like really nasty, deep-rooted prejudice against francophones. You hear all sorts of stuff about French Canadians and Quebec when you’re in Ontario or Alberta.

You should hear what people in Quebec say about English people from Ontario and Alberta 😉

Oldest trick in the book, divide and conquer. Keep the poors fighting over ethnic identity and the powers-that-be can get away with all kinds of antisocial moves to line their pockets.

A brief but amusing piece from a New Hampshire writer describes Montreal with admiration but gets lost in the feeling of seeing Donald Trump on a TV screen in the metro: “The floppy hair, the red tie, the over‑sized suit. He has become an American icon, as instantly recognizable, as two‑dimensional, and as silly as Mickey Mouse.”

This item says the city is short of ashtrays although I’ll bet most smokers still toss their butts on the ground regardless whether there are better disposal options around.

Quentin Dufranne reminds us that in 2020, 245 fires were started by people putting out their smokes in flowerpots, and that in general, one in five fires is started by a cigarette.

I noticed in Plateau about 2/3rds of the wastebaskets that we had on sidewalks were removed, some leaving a square concrete base behind. Weirdly, plastic bags of garbage appear on these bases, even though we were supposed not to use these bins for ‘household waste’ when they still existed.

        • Forgetful 16:27 on 2023-08-08 Permalink

I honestly believe that Montreal cleanliness problems are not a municipal organization issue or a waste management issue, but a cultural issue. Sadly a lot of us are deeply narcissistic and treat the entire city as a garbage can. Keeping your garbage on you or in your car is such a drag, why not throw it wherever. And if you dare call out someone for littering, be prepared to get into a fight.

Is it specific to this city, though?

A man who was found with multiple gunshot wounds at Guy and Ste‑Catherine early Monday has died, the 19th homicide of the year.

Later, TVA says the victim was called Justice Owusu Tajudeen and had a criminal history.

Nice piece. He is very much a pillar of Mile End though he has stuff everywhere. I love his wild art philosophy.
