Short-term rental offers are surging in advance of Grand Prix weekend. Now, if the government wanted to collect a lot of fines, they should hire short‑term inspectors too.

Following from a post (and comments) earlier, Mohamed Abdullah Warsame has to undergo a psychiatric evaluation after revealing his supposed plans to set off bombs on public transit.

Fighter jets are expected to fly over Molson Stadium at 7:30 pm Friday to mark the Alouettes game.
Although there are usually two planes doing this exercise, this time there will be four.
I found this info on reddit, but can’t find anything official to link to. But now you’re warned.
Later, TVA posted that it would be two planes.

It just seems with Grand Prix happening next weekend and the smoke that has drifted in from the prairie wildfires, that there’d be some kind of mandate to not have unnecessary carbon emissions from fighter jets, which burn a considerable amount of fuel. The Grand Prix should be cancelled, but oh! the amount of profits that’d be lost. We are just f*cked as a species.
MtlWeb
Meezly – need Grand Prix to stay on so that STM can run on regular schedule for me to get to/from 12 hour hospital shifts without needing lifts
MarcG
Thanks for sharing that, Meezly, I couldn’t find the words.

Who foots the bill for these football fighter jet flyovers? And what kind of permits are required?
Meezly
No need to worry @MtlWeb, no one’s gonna cancel Grand Prix. The entire city could be obscured by wildfire smoke and the machines of capitalism will keep on churning.
Blork
Regarding the question of who pays for these flyovers, my understanding is that there is no “bill.” Pilots are required to fly a certain number of hours per month for training and skills maintenance, so these planes would be flying anyway. It’s just a matter of when and where.
I don’t think there are specific permits either, but air traffic control needs to have advance notice so they can keep the route clear.
I’m not 100% sure of that, so if anyone has better information let’s hear it.
Ian
That’s a really good point about flight hours, Blork. I hadn’t considered that but i guess for events it’s an easy win.
Blork
I saw/heard them from a terrasse in St-Lambert, and oddly, no one complained about the noise!
Nicholas
Blork, I had heard of that years ago, from someone who was in the Air Force (admittedly in the 60s). People would fly and see their friends, go to a favourite restaurant, whatever: you needed your hours.
And I heard the jets pass overhead, not as loud as I remember.

It was reported Thursday that a man had fallen into the Lachine Canal during an altercation. The man has died. It’s not yet mentioned whether this will be counted as a homicide.

The Rover’s story about a spontaneous walkout at Sud‑Ouest borough over a “mandatory barbecue” goes into more detail about conditions at the borough: “Four out of the borough’s 10 garbage trucks are out of commission, two of its three sidewalk sweepers are in the shop and the team that used to repair sidewalks has been cut for the summer.”
I’ve seen nothing about the situation in mainstream media, but Christopher Curtis is that old‑school guy, an investigative reporter.

Yes, this is a great piece. Extremely frustrating to read about “management” continuing to cut services while forcing stupid morale boosters on the workers. I really felt for that poor low-level manager who had been clearly forced against his will to make the announcement.
Kevin
Some manager has too much power and no business having it whatsoever.
Managers need to remember that employees don’t work for them, they work for the company.

Weekend notes from CityCrunch, La Presse, the Gazette, Le Devoir, CultMTL.
Good places to find road cones this weekend.

Went to the Le Devoir-recommended (annual) École national du cirque’s graduating students show at le Tohu and it’s again a great show. Two evening shows and two matinee shows this weekend.

Wildfire smoke is in town, giving us poor air quality and reduced visibility. There’s a warning up.
Media are emphasizing that our air is worse than India or China at the moment.
MarcG
I noticed a few people in N95s earlier but also lots of people out jogging and biking without protection, and my wife still managed to be called a ‘connasse’ at in the hospital because of her mask. Fun world we live in, how’s back-to-normal working out for everyone else?
Ian
A HEPA respirator mask would be better for smoke protection, but worse for virus control because it doesn’t filter outflow, only inflow. The point of an N95 is to protect others, the point of a respirator is to filter your air intake. Anti-pollution bike masks are a whole other thing. It can be pretty stylish too, you should check out the pollen masks popular in Japan in sakura season.

I just went out to the shops around the corner from my house, I was outside for maybe 15 minutes and can already feel it in my eyes and throat. My job is spent almost entirely outdoors so it’s going to be a tough couple days (hopefully not weeks!)
Kate
There’s a “chance of showers” Saturday. We can hope.
I’m feeling it too, this morning, especially in the eyes. Had windows open all night.
MarcG
The mechanism that allows exhaled air to leave the mask without filtration, thus making breathing easier but as you said not protect others from your buggy breath, is called an ‘exhalation valve’ and many different types of masks can have them. And an N95 is a ‘respirator’ and protects the wearer.
Here’s an article from the Harvard School of Public Health titled Choosing the right respirator after a wildfire: guidance for the general public.

Yeah, it smells like the inside of a bbq out there. And my throat is scratchy after a half-hour. Wanted to do some kind of workout today and now wondering if it might actually be worse than just doing nothing. Scary times.
MarcG
Here’s an article covering lots of points of view on outdoor exercise in smoky conditions
EmilyG
I wore a mask outside today (had to go to the store.)
CE
I was outside for work from 11:30-7:30 today and came home with my eyes being a little bit scratchy and my throat feeling a little dry but nothing serious. I had much worse effects during the 2023 fires and it’s never as bad as it would be on a regular weekday when I lived in Bogotá. Kind of a depressing looking sky for most of the day though.
Kevin
It’s become much worse this evening. I’ve kicked my air purifiers into Turbo mode for an hour or two before going to bed.
MarcG
Like with most things in life, the initial response may not represent the total effect. PM2.5 can get deep into your lungs and potentially enter your bloodstream, causing all kinds of bad shit. An N95 mask costs $1. And here’s a tool to help anyone looking to purchase an air cleaner.
MarcG
Here’s a better link to the air cleaner tool with some options pre-selected so it’s more appropriate for smoke (vs Covid which it was designed for), you just need to adjust the room size and amount of noise you can tolerate.

The SPVM is boosting its presence downtown this summer, and although crime is mentioned, it sounds more like the homeless are the target.
Ian
This is an excellent example of something that would be more appropriately dealt with by spending part of the police budget differently, like on the CIUSSS, for instance. Or 211. almost any of the agencies here: https://www.211qc.ca/en/search?cat-id=11&sub-cat=mobile-units-and-street-work
But police presence is all about optics, not solutions, so whatever.
PatrickC
My brother lives very near the St Benoît Labre injection site, and he would love to see more police intervention to work with the unhoused there, but he has never seen a cop on foot in the area. They just drive by without ever getting out of their cars. My sister-in-law now takes big detours when she does her errands in the neighborhood.

Or pay a bounty of 20% on the fines collected if you provide enough information that they can fine them 🙂
