Someone has unofficially told La Presse that the shots heard Tuesday night in Ahuntsic had nothing to do with Thomas Trudel. The assumption was made because a couple of friends of the murdered teenager happened to be in the vicinity.

The blog’s going to go through a couple more adjustments, sorry about that.

Update: And here we are. Regular reader MarcG has been of inestimable help to me in sorting out the coding under the hood that was causing massive slowdowns yesterday. And thanks all for your patience.

Am I the only one who has to rotate their phone to read this site? Any chance of a more convenient layout for mobile browsers?

I could probably come up with a few quick and dirty CSS styles that would make it easier to use on phones.

It seems to be working exactly as it was before. The downsides are that there is not really a mobile mode (as it was before), and it no longer remembers my name/email (like before). @Tim, I find that setting my mobile browser to “desktop mode” strangely gives me a better layout than leaving the default setting. This was the case before, as well.

Oh, there’s a checkbox to remember my info! There’s one problem fixed!

It’s going to be a bit of a mess. I have to abandon the old WordPress theme (the template on which the blog runs) and install a new one, because the old one was not updated for a long time and was causing errors. You’ll see some messy stuff as I get on with this.

There’s a problem, though: it seems no new theme carries through the links from my existing posts. So the posts will exist before a certain date, but not linked to any news stories. I don’t know why not but we may have to go on without them.

Think of this as orange cones in cyberspace.

Oh noze! All of a sudden, JdM has stopped letting you view even linked articles in a browser with an ad blocker. At least the unblock-or-else message is good for a laugh: “Soutenez Le Journal et ses artisans…” (my emphasis).

Works for me using uBlock Origin.

@MarcG I’m using the latest version of Opera on the latest version of Windows 10. Opera’s native ad blocker is turned off. The only add-ons (extensions) I have are LastPass, Privacy Badger and uBlock Origin. Even with Privacy Badger disabled, I’m still getting the unblock-or-scram message whenever I visit the JdeM site.

          • dhomas 05:15 on 2022-03-24 Permalink

I’m getting it, too. On both the JdM and TVA articles on mobile using a network-wide ad blocker (https://pi-hole.net/). Very annoying.

          • Joey 14:58 on 2022-03-24 Permalink

Reader view on mobile usually allows you to read the text without the nagging overlay imploring you to turn off your ad blocker. I use Mercury Reader on Chrome (desktop) to get text-only versions of websites, like most news sites, that fill your screen with junk; it renders JdeM pages just fine. Best part is that it sits in your toolbar so once you load a page with the nagging box, you just need to hit a button and it does its thing.

The area being described here as the Bridge-Bonaventure sector will be developed to contain 4000 new housing units including 1270 described here as “social and affordable” units. I’m seeing this more often: not “social housing” but “social and affordable” which is weaselly. All it takes is a minor turn to the right at city hall, and those units become only affordable in the federal sense.

Valérie Plante summed up her thoughts on the Quebec budget on Facebook.

Headlines on the budget are mixed. QMI notes that there’s not much in the budget for Montreal and not much for housing, whereas Radio‑Canada’s headline says the exact opposite.

What a waste of $3 billion, I get it, a lot of people can use $500 but at the end of the day it’s a drop in the bucket. They could have thrown that money into healthcare and education, hire more resource teachers for example. Or maybe hire more therapists to help alleviate the 5 year wait for those with autistic kids that need help.

                • EmilyG 15:38 on 2022-03-23 Permalink

Or hire more people who can show how current autism therapies are harming children, and look into fixing that.

It’s worrying. This instance of the blog has more than 11,500 posts in it (and more than 38,000 comments!), which may be pushing the limits. Although that may not be the issue at all. Tuesday’s crash was due to running on an older version of PHP, among other things, and I just saw a fleeting critical error myself, which may mean more debugging.

                • Blork 10:11 on 2022-03-23 Permalink

I don’t like this new behaviour where making a comment first sends you into the post as a permalink (which is slow and then leaves you with only the current post and no other context). Posting the comment is slow too, and then it returns you to just that one post and comments (i.e., the permalink) not the full page.

                • MarcG 10:18 on 2022-03-23 Permalink

@Blork: There’s an error in the javascript and what you’re seeing is the fallback behavior. When everything gets sorted out it shouldn’t happen anymore.

MarcG, it sounds like you know more than I do about what’s under the hood here. Any other observations?

                • MarcG 16:13 on 2022-03-23 Permalink

@Kate: If you open up developer tools (F12) and look at the Console tab, you’ll see the error message (I is null) when you click on the reply button. It’s not easy to understand the problem since the code is minified. If I had to guess I would say that it’s because the p2 theme needs some tweaks to work the latest WordPress version. Send me an email if you want me to look into it.

                • Kate 18:42 on 2022-03-23 Permalink

MarcG, my hosting folks also say it’s the theme. P2 has not been updated since 2016! I don’t know the history of why Automattic abandoned their own themes but it looks like I have no choice but to adopt and customize a new theme from a different source.

Any advice on reliable theme providers? There are so many around, and no such thing as an objectively critical site.

                • dhomas 05:27 on 2022-03-24 Permalink

I don’t use the P2 theme on my WP page myself, but googling seems to mention a “relaunched” version in 2020:
                  https://wptavern.com/automattic-relaunches-p2-self-hosted-version-on-the-roadmap

I had some breakage on my page, though, when I updated PHP and MySQL. IIRC, the breaking change came when I upgraded from PHP 7.2 to 7.3 or it might have been 8.0.

I’m not WordPress pro by any means, but I manage my own site entirely (from managing the server itself to the hosting of the site) as well as one for work. If I can offer any help that your provider hasn’t already tried, send me an email and I’ll see what I can do.
