Someone has unofficially told La Presse that the shots heard Tuesday night in Ahuntsic had nothing to do with Thomas Trudel. The assumption was made because a couple of friends of the murdered teenager happened to be in the vicinity.

The city is suing a firm called AECOM for allegedly making errors and omissions in the plans for the SRB-Pie-IX, problems which could cost the city upwards of $1.5 million.

The blog’s going to go through a couple more adjustments, sorry about that.
Update: And here we are. Regular reader MarcG has been of inestimable help to me in sorting out the coding under the hood that was causing massive slowdowns yesterday. And thanks all for your patience.

omg threaded comments the end is nigh!!!
Blork
Big thumbs up for MarcG!
Ian
Big thumbs up to both of you! Looks great. 🙂
walkerp
Great work! Thanks MarcG and thanks as always, Kate, for the site.

Unthreaded those comments : )

Am I the only one who has to rotate their phone to read this site? Any chance of a more convenient layout for mobile browsers?
MarcG
I could probably come up with a few quick and dirty CSS styles that would make it easier to use on phones.
dhomas
It seems to be working exactly as it was before. The downsides are that there is not really a mobile mode (as it was before), and it no longer remembers my name/email (like before). @Tim, I find that setting my mobile browser to “desktop mode” strangely gives me a better layout than leaving the default setting. This was the case before, as well.
dhomas
Oh, there’s a checkbox to remember my info! There’s one problem fixed!
qatzelok
Welcome back, Kate!
Meezly
Glad to see this back up!
dhomas
Today, the site is displaying much nicer on mobile, too! No need to set my mobile browser to “desktop mode” anymore. Great work! Not only did you get the site working again, but it’s better than ever!
Kate
That’s all down to MarcG, dhomas. He’s the hero of the hour around here!
MarcG
I’m happy to be able to contribute something besides snarky comments.
Tee Owe
Glad you’re back thanks to everyone who helped

Wow! What an improvement! Great job!

The Victoria bridge is closed till Friday for an emergency inspection.
Update: The Jacques-Cartier bridge now says it’s back open already.
DeWolf
Good to know the bridges check up on one another.

Kate
Thanks to reader MarcG the comments are now displaying, although I’m going to have to tighten up the whole display of this blog, as you can see.
But it’s working. Sort of.
Yeah. Not quite back yet. Thanks all for patience.

I can also confirm the RSS feed is still working (in case anyone aside from me still uses RSS!)
dhomas
RSS user here, too. Still working on my end.
The blog now also does a better job of remembering my name and email address. It also displays better on mobile, though the design is currently quite… minimalist. 🙂
Good work helping to get things working again, @MarcG!Blork
Well, at least it looks the same on mobile. 🙂
carswell
Whoa! What happened?! Happy days are here again? Gratitude and applause!
Kate
Not quite yet, carswell. I’m still tinkering and there may be a few crazy moments before I can say it’s done.

There’s the 10 trip offers, which last year was expanded to include a 10 trip zone 1+2 offer.

In January, there were 3666 fewer restaurants in Quebec than two years previously. Le Devoir talks to a couple of Montreal restaurateurs who had to close up shop, and sees how they’re doing.

It’s going to be a bit of a mess. I have to abandon the old WordPress theme (the template on which the blog runs) and install a new one, because the old one was not updated for a long time and was causing errors. You’ll see some messy stuff as I get on with this.
There’s a problem, though: it seems no new theme carries through the links from my existing posts. So the posts will exist before a certain date, but not linked to any news stories. I don’t know why not but we may have to go on without them.
Think of this as orange cones in cyberspace.
MarcG
“it seems no new theme carries through the links from my existing posts” – this doesn’t really make sense and shouldn’t happen.

Shit! Hang in there

Shots were fired Tuesday night in the north end, and two of the young men who were apparently targeted were friends of Thomas Trudel, the young man who was shot dead in the street in that part of town in November, and were with him when he was shot.
carswell
Oh noze! All of a sudden, JdM has stopped letting you view even linked articles in a browser with an ad blocker. At least the unblock-or-else message is good for a laugh: “Soutenez Le Journal et ses artisans…” (my emphasis).
MarcG
Works for me using uBlock Origin.
carswell
@MarcG I’m using the latest version of Opera on the latest version of Windows 10. Opera’s native ad blocker is turned off. The only add-ons (extensions) I have are LastPass, Privacy Badger and uBlock Origin. Even with Privacy Badger disabled, I’m still getting the unblock-or-scram message whenever I visit the JdeM site.
dhomas
I’m getting it, too. On both the JdM and TVA articles on mobile using a network-wide ad blocker (https://pi-hole.net/). Very annoying.
Joey
Reader view on mobile usually allows you to read the text without the nagging overlay imploring you to turn off your ad blocker. I use Mercury Reader on Chrome (desktop) to get text-only versions of websites, like most news sites, that fill your screen with junk; it renders JdeM pages just fine. Best part is that it sits in your toolbar so once you load a page with the nagging box, you just need to hit a button and it does its thing.

A staunchly pro-Russian professor at the Université de Montréal is causing bad feeling at the university, which says he is not currently teaching. Questions of freedom of expression vs. teaching blatant falsehoods are being raised.
carswell
Not going to link to it, but the guy’s Twitter feed is something else. Delusional, propagandistic and nasty. He also has a French Wikipedia page, which unfortunately hasn’t been updated to reflect the
fact that he’s an offensive, misinformation-spewing Russian shillcontroversy.Raymond Lutz
“Questions of freedom of expression vs. teaching blatant falsehoods are being raised.”
Quel principal mensonge lui reproche-t-on?

Quebec is asking its health service to prepare for a sixth wave of Covid, this time the BA.2 variant, and a fourth round of vaccine, at least for the elderly and vulnerable.

The area being described here as the Bridge-Bonaventure sector will be developed to contain 4000 new housing units including 1270 described here as “social and affordable” units. I’m seeing this more often: not “social housing” but “social and affordable” which is weaselly. All it takes is a minor turn to the right at city hall, and those units become only affordable in the federal sense.

Valérie Plante summed up her thoughts on the Quebec budget on Facebook.
Headlines on the budget are mixed. QMI notes that there’s not much in the budget for Montreal and not much for housing, whereas Radio‑Canada’s headline says the exact opposite.

But everyone can buy a new iPad!
YUL514
What a waste of $3 billion, I get it, a lot of people can use $500 but at the end of the day it’s a drop in the bucket. They could have thrown that money into healthcare and education, hire more resource teachers for example. Or maybe hire more therapists to help alleviate the 5 year wait for those with autistic kids that need help.
EmilyG
Or hire more people who can show how current autism therapies are harming children, and look into fixing that.
YUL514
Oh oh, please tell me more. I don’t have a kid on the spectrum but I know quite a few parents that do.

Well, that downtime was unpleasant, but I give all kudos to the people at whc.ca who helped me sort it out. Things may be a little faster now and I hope they’ll work better. Please let me know of any glitches you experience.

Just got a critical error warning but it loaded fine on refresh – Chrome 97.0.4692.71, Mac OS Monterey 12.1
Kate
It’s worrying. This instance of the blog has more than 11,500 posts in it (and more than 38,000 comments!), which may be pushing the limits. Although that may not be the issue at all. Tuesday’s crash was due to running on an older version of PHP, among other things, and I just saw a fleeting critical error myself, which may mean more debugging.
Blork
I don’t like this new behaviour where making a comment first sends you into the post as a permalink (which is slow and then leaves you with only the current post and no other context). Posting the comment is slow too, and then it returns you to just that one post and comments (i.e., the permalink) not the full page.
MarcG
@Blork: There’s an error in the javascript and what you’re seeing is the fallback behavior. When everything gets sorted out it shouldn’t happen anymore.
Kate
MarcG, it sounds like you know more than I do about what’s under the hood here. Any other observations?
MarcG
@Kate: If you open up developer tools (F12) and look at the Console tab, you’ll see the error message (I is null) when you click on the reply button. It’s not easy to understand the problem since the code is minified. If I had to guess I would say that it’s because the p2 theme needs some tweaks to work the latest WordPress version. Send me an email if you want me to look into it.
Kate
MarcG, my hosting folks also say it’s the theme. P2 has not been updated since 2016! I don’t know the history of why Automattic abandoned their own themes but it looks like I have no choice but to adopt and customize a new theme from a different source.
Any advice on reliable theme providers? There are so many around, and no such thing as an objectively critical site.
Kevin
Ooh it looks very different on a phone…
dhomas
I don’t use the P2 theme on my WP page myself, but googling seems to mention a “relaunched” version in 2020:
https://wptavern.com/automattic-relaunches-p2-self-hosted-version-on-the-roadmapI had some breakage on my page, though, when I updated PHP and MySQL. IIRC, the breaking change came when I upgraded from PHP 7.2 to 7.3 or it might have been 8.0.
I’m not WordPress pro by any means, but I manage my own site entirely (from managing the server itself to the hosting of the site) as well as one for work. If I can offer any help that your provider hasn’t already tried, send me an email and I’ll see what I can do.
