Longueuil saw a police brutality protest Sunday, the police shooting of Nooran Rezayi in September still on people’s minds.

The BEI report on that killing was submitted this week but hasn’t yet been made public.

Not one of those bastards will serve a minute of time, even though the one that shot the kid had a history of singling him and his friends out. ALL the responding officers that day should be disciplined, the ones who started the “investigation” before reporting the death should all be fired for clearly violating BEI protocol, and the shooter should be in jail – his clearly prejudicial conduct lead to manslaughter of an unarmed minor.

The neighbourhood rat will hopefully be shunned for the rest of their lives, as well as having to live with the shame of causing the death of an innocent kid.

Licence plates can get stolen and replaced with others, although the reason why anyone would do this is handwaved here with the vague explanation that stolen plates may be used in criminal activities.

Happened to my friend. She noticed at work but thinks it happened while parked in her neighborhood. I always check my plate before I enter my car because of that. I pretty much do a quick look over my car, as years ago my car was keyed a bit and I hadn’t noticed till my dad pointed it out. For my own safety, I also look in the backseat as I enter my car and lock my doors right away once in.

Years ago, when I was living in Ontario and owned a car, they didn’t even swap. Every vehicle would have a front and back plate and they just removed my front one and took off with it. I didn’t even notice until the police called me about it. I gather it had been on a vehicle used in some sort of crime, but the registration did not match the vehicle it was found on. At that point, it was parked overnight in an outdoor parking lot that anyone could access. So, hard to say exactly when it happened.

They often steal plates at the airport, because it takes longer to report and they don’t do a good job with surveillance. You steal a car, change the plate, so the police don’t see the stolen plate. Especially since most stolen cars are foreign plates…. they aren’t looking for a local plate.

More snow is on the way Sunday evening and then things will warm up overnight, giving us massive puddles for Monday morning.

There are some news stories that flip‑flop incomprehensibly over time. Here’s one: government grants for homeless services no sooner announced than there’s news that the funding’s going to dry up soon. Do governments think people are going to forget that funding was promised? Has homelessness been solved already?

We have to face it as a society that funding for these shelters and support staff has to be a regular thing, and not be offered and withdrawn with the winds of politics.

woman reading newspaperLike it or not, Trump was the dominant image in this week’s cartoons, saying goodbye to Kristi Noem, acting as a military commander, his screwed‑up priorities, and his danger to the planet.

Pierre Poilievre’s support for giving the Order of Canada to Don Cherry – unpopular in Quebec even among its Conservatives – was pilloried by Chapleau, and the distribution of Radio‑Canada’s RDI feed on Amazon was mocked by Godin.

Quebec politics were not a big topic this week, although Godin got in a simple but strong image about Quebec immigration policies and Côté commented on the dominance of war news over stories about succession at the CAQ.

Social commentary had a moment, with weather, recycling, the cost of fuel and the prevalence of ever larger vehicles being noted.

Ygreck may have been on vacation this week, as we’ve seen no new cartoons in the Journal since March 8.

Le Devoir has a piece on a topic we’ve raised on the blog from time to time: how so many schools (as well as towns and other things) are named after Catholic saints in so‑secular Quebec.

Sunday, La Presse has a dossier, interviewing three women who fled religious families – interestingly, none of them Catholic. Maybe they couldn’t find one?

It’s interesting to read this today as I just met someone (an Italian) who fled her extremely conservative Catholic family for Paris.
