Le Parchemin goes out of business
The bookstore Le Parchemin, a familiar sight at Berri-UQÀM station, has abruptly gone out of business and closed their store.
Another closure of a longtime establishment was noted recently by Eater: the Chao Phraya on Laurier, one of the city’s oldest Thai restaurants.

That’s a real shame.

The bookstore or the resto?
I can’t say I ever patronized either, but the Parchemin sign even made me hate University Roman a little less.

I haven’t been to the resto in ages. The food was very good, but with so many other Thai options around it seemed silly to pay all that extra money just to eat it in a refined space with fancy tablecloths.
Regarding the bookstore, that’s a shame too. It was a nice space with interesting items (not just books). A nice place to spend some browsing time if for some reason you have time to kill at Berri/UQAM (which apparently I did a few times).

Honestly I see their niche as already occupied by Renaud-Bray, the only advantage they had was that one prime location.

…as far as Chao Phraya goes about 5 years ago it closed very briefly and reopened exactly the same after a month or so under new management, which this article doesn’t mention. It was often completely empty, I’m kind of surprised it managed to stay in business for so long – I suspected that maybe they owned the building but I guess that wasn’t the case.

Chao Phraya was always busy when I went there (probably 5 times in 10 years). The last time I went, a couple of years ago, the prices were really expensive (18$ and up for a single dish) and I chose never to go back.
