Viger Hotel to get giant new development
CultMTL has news of the massive glass box development being planned for the old Viger Hotel. This is not the first project to be planned for the building, and in the past people were appalled at putting something like that at the edge of Old Montreal.

This project is not planned, it’s under construction and already quite far along.

Well, it’s not a glass box, which would indicate a curtain wall, a DeWolf’s photos show, they’re framing the exterior walls with wood, and the exterior cladding system provides for maybe 25% more window surface than you’d find on your average new build triplex.
In Old Montreal these days, you’re going to discover that whatever reservations people had about more modern buildings are long gone. There’s a true glass curtain wall building recently built at the corner of McGill and Le Moyne, for instance, three on Riopelle Place, and one going in on Saint Paul Street itself. Beyond that, the entire area east of Old Montreal is new build, the Faubourg des Récollets is under heavy redevelopment, and there are active development plans for numerous infill sites on parking lots across Old Montreal.
