City buys land for Mary Griffin park

The city is buying land in Griffintown to create Mary Griffin Park between Ann, Dalhousie, William and Ottawa streets – the lot behind New City Gas. Nice to have something named for a woman, but the story of Mary Griffin isn’t exactly admirable, as I understand it, and as is told here: Thomas McCord, the owner of the fief Nazareth, was away in Ireland, and meanwhile Griffin somehow managed to get control of the land, split it into lots and sell it off. Maybe she’s a heroine for our times, at that.
