Repentigny shooting: protest in view
I try to stick to stories on the island of Montreal, but if I’m posting about deer in Longueuil I’ve got to post about the shooting in Repentigny on the weekend. The mother of a Black man called 911 because he was having mental health problems, expecting help in getting him to hospital – but police showed up and shot the man dead. There’s a sit-in planned at Repentigny city hall Wednesday at 6 pm.
“911 is not for Black people,” said Marie-Mireille Bence, the mother of Jean René Junior Olivier. Hard to argue with that.

The broader context is that Repentigny has a fast-growing Haitian community and a police force that seems to go out of its way to target Black people. The Human Rights Commission have ruled against the police in four separate cases over the past year alone.
