    Folks, I was just pondering the weblog calendar for next year. But does anyone download the calendar, print it out, use it?

    Would people consider buying a calendar if I had one printed, rather than just making a PDF file available?

    I notice that neither Patreon nor Vistaprint even offers calendars as “merch” – is the very idea obsolete?

    Also, if I were to do one, any suggestions for themes? So far, it’s been:

    2017 – historical photos and graphics of Montreal from the U.S. Library of Congress image bank.
    2018 – historical photos, cover based on a promotional poster from the Crystal Palace in 1884.
    2019 – theme: brutalism, photos by me
    2020 – theme: columns on various buildings, photos by me
    2021 – stairs, photos by me
    2022 – Montreal by night, featuring photos by Ben Soo

    Update: Vistaprint charges around $25 per calendar to print, standard size with a spiral hinge. I don’t know what those cost to mail, but say $5. Would anyone want to pay $30 for a calendar?

    In the past I’ve always included a lot of historical date information on the calendar, but since people mostly use printed calendars to jot down reminders, leaving those on a print version might not be ideal.

    Thinking aloud here, mostly. It’s quite a lot of work doing the calendar and it’s nice to know people do download it.

      Theme ideas:
      Nature in Montreal (trees, animals, flowers, etc.)
      Pictures of art in Montreal (or artistic pictures)
      Famous buildings
      Little-known buildings
      Lesser-known parts of Montreal

    • Margaret 06:56 on 2022-08-25 Permalink

      I would definitely buy a hard copy. A wall-mounted calendar is still our go-to at home to avoid scheduling conflicts. I like EmilyG’s ideas, especially the Lesser-known parts of Montreal theme.

      I print some out at Staples to send to the various ex-Montrealers in my life. It’s very Montreal without being cliché. Getting it to come out right is a tad fiddly but not too bad. But buying hard copies would be even better.

      I always enjoy looking at the calendar, but I don’t print it. (Already feel overwhelmed with calendars.)

      I have printed the 2019 and 2020 editions. It’s great to have access to a pdf but I would very likely buy a printed copy for convenience and gifts.

      Theme ideas: cycling in Montreal, more historical photos, Montreal gardens

      I download it, look at it, and enjoy it. But I don’t print it or use it, fwiw. I use electronic calendars these days. I do enjoy the photos, the selected comments, and the historical tidbits.

      A few ideas though not many that could easily be realized by year-end:
      Another architectural style (art deco, Georgian, mid-century modern, neo-classical, Québécois, etc.);
      Ruelles vertes;
      Specimen/iconic trees;
      An identifiably Montreal scene taken from the same position on the same day each month over the course of a year;
      Abandoned buildings;
      New public spaces — for example, the Esplanade tranquille, Verdun beach, the former Lachine marina (which, now that it’s cleared out, you can see has the potential to be one of the city’s gems), Phillips Square, Pine Ave., the PVM esplanade, the REV;
      REM stations, provided they’re not too cookie-cutterish;
      Multi-year project: a borough a year.

      I always have the PDF sitting on my desktop. Would buy a nicely printed version if for no other reason than supporting the blog. Suspect that, with a little promotional work, you wouldn’t find it too hard to sell copies to a wider public; most existing Montreal calendars are filled with predictable tourist shots and there’s probably a niche to fill (Montreal Cats! if you want to go bigtime…). Would greatly miss the historical date info if dropped.

      I’ve been printing my own calendars for the last six years, might be nice for someone else to do it. Shipping costs usually stop me cold — I’ve seen go as high as $60 shipping on a $8 item.

    The proposed Lachine éco-quartier, meant to eventually include 7400 households, should be kept to eight storeys says the OCPM. The initially proposed limit was 15 storeys; developers wanted 20.

      A tweet from the Mayor after a presser Wednesday vowed to use federal and provincial money to counter gun violence. In that thread she mentions hiring more police, creating something called “équipes-écoles”, using provincial money for undefined prevention programs, and federal money to buy back guns.

        The Police Brotherhood says Mayor Plante has broken her promise to hire more police, while she still plans to hire 282 more officers.

        There’s absolutely no guarantee they can recruit that many cops in that time or that hiring them will fix the issue of gunplay, but it’s becoming a political issue.

        • steph 10:28 on 2022-08-25 Permalink

          The brotherhood really has a chip against Plante. I have an inlaw in the SPVM and he’s convinced “Plante hates us and wants to destroy us”. He has no rebuttle to “then why has Plante increased funds to the SPVM?”. There’s a serious disconnect.

        • Kate 11:21 on 2022-08-25 Permalink

          I think it’s a perception of Projet as lefty, and lefty = anti-police. This may also be why Plante is going gung‑ho for more cops, in an effort to change that perception.

        TVA explores the life of Diego Fiorita, 50, who put up a little video about how he adored life shortly before being shot dead on the terrasse of the Pizzeria Napoli on Tuesday. You can easily find this video on Facebook: “J’adore la vie!”

        TVA found out that Fiorita was facing charges over domestic issues, and Google tells me he was a magazine publisher, a martial arts practitioner, and a sports announcer, among other things.

        La Presse dropped by various commercial neighbours of the Napoli to find out how people are feeling.

          The production of the movie Scream 6 has dressed part of NDG to look like New York, but the Gazette uses this as a hook to complain about how Hollywood shoots are down and blaming it on city bureaucracy. The coda lists several other American productions coming, but it’s usually Gazette policy to kick the city when you have a chance.

            Ironically, Transplant (CTV) is filmed here in Montreal as a stand-in for Toronto. Just establishing shots are done in Toronto. See https://www.republicworld.com/entertainment-news/hollywood-news/where-transplant-filmed-details-of-shooting-locations.html

          • Robert H 11:55 on 2022-08-24 Permalink

            Montréal a dû offrir aux producteurs de “Scream 6” un meilleur paquet de réduction des coûts, car si vous avez besoin d’un décor new-yorkais sans New York, Toronto constitue un meilleur choix. Même leur métro ressemble plus à celui de New York. L’avantage de Toronto, dans ce cas, est qu’il s’agit d’un paysage urbain plus générique que celui de Montréal. C’est comme quelqu’un a dit dans la série “30 Rock”, “Toronto’s like New York without all the stuff.”

            J’espère que Montréal pourra attirer davantage de grosses productions, car elles sont bonnes pour les caisses de la ville, mais les seuls tournages de films qui m’intéressent vraiment ici sont ceux où la ville joue son propre rôle, et non un substitut d’un autre endroit. Le dernier film que je me souviens d’avoir vu qui a été tourné à Montréal et qui s’y déroulait réellement était “The Score” et c’était en 2001 ! Le plaisir de repérer les points de repère locaux dans ce film a compensé le fait qu’il n’était pas génial, juste moyen.

            P.S. J’adore cette fausse entrée du subway!

            Je prends le métro quand je suis à New York, et bien que j’aie parcouru toute la ville, je connais surtout Manhattan et Brooklyn. Je ne me souvenais pas d’une station dans 45th Street, mais je pensais qu’il y avait peut-être une entrée dans cette rue pour la station 42nd Street. En jetant un coup d’œil à Google Maps, je trouve une station à 45th Street sur la ligne de 4th Avenue à Brooklyn, une station que je n’ai jamais vue ou traversée.

            So, “kick this one for Brooklyn.”

            Local shooting is great for the local economy, but I wasn’t happy about being blocked access to my own home (as they were shooting on my street). ”we left you a notice two weeks ago about the limiting access”. Get bent!

            I really like seeing shots with Montreal locations, but I can also find it distracting “How did they turn right off Rene-Levesque onto Mt-Royal street????”

            Every so often, I’ll check out the chase scenes from Blazing Magnum (1976) to see how Montreal has changed and the parts that are still recognizable. It’s also a pretty good chase scene.

            @Steph, I feel your pain! If anything, the permits the city gives in residential areas are a bit too broad if they allow barring people from their homes. A few times, I’ve pretended not to hear through my headphones and kept walking.

            They film for RC’s L’Auberge du chien noir around here. We got angry at the city for not telling us. But I got even more angry when they went on my property. The city can give them a permit for everything up to my personal property. At that point, it’s trespass. They also film Just for Laughs Gags around here… one many on our street has been caught 3 times. How do you get so gullible that you get caught three times and not notice they always have a porta-potty

          Stop signs in TMR have been pasted over with ARRÊT by language activists.

          • Thomas 08:48 on 2022-08-24 Permalink

            A stop sign is commanding you to stop — as in the imperative form of the verb ‘to stop’ — is it not? So shouldn’t all stop signs in Quebec actually say ‘Arrêtez’ instead of ‘Arrêt’? This has been troubling me for well over a decade…

          • Kate 09:29 on 2022-08-24 Permalink

            I think of the French version as a noun, not a verb.

          • Thomas 09:54 on 2022-08-24 Permalink

            @Kate they’re definitely using it as a noun, but I think they’re mistaken. English grammar is so simple that several forms of a given verb (and even the noun form) will often use the same spelling. My theory is that they mistakenly translated the noun ‘stop’ instead of the imperative verb ‘stop’.

            Of course most countries simply use ‘stop’, but there must be another society out there somewhere that is as proud as the Quebec nation and that has also translated their stop signs, thereby allowing for a grammatical comparison 😉

            In Europe they solved this a long time ago by omitting the text completely. It’s already a very special sign because of its hexagonal shape, why do we need to put words on it?
