Some history bits from different sources: Kristian has some photos of the old Waldman’s fish emporium on Roy, plus (inevitably) a lurid story connected with someone who worked there; for Women’s Day, Radio-Canada looked back at earlier reports about non-traditional occupations for women; I’ve mostly ignored a series in the Gazette called History through our eyes in which the paper pulls up images from its photo bank with some background giving context – currently, a 1940 photo of women playing hockey.

And then there’s the weekend Centre d’histoire piece, which looks at the corner of Beaubien and St-Vallier near the metro station and the changes it has undergone since 1961.

I was sorry to read about a wave of resignations at the Metro newspaper. Over the years it’s been a decent source for this blog, considering its modest aspirations, besides having preserved a ghost of the old neighbourhood weeklies in a drop-down from the menu. It’s always been an agreeable counterweight to 24H, the Journal’s baby brother paper, as well.

At least we can hope it’s not the end for the journal. There’s plenty of new journalists that was hired in the last year or so in the journal (no one was hired when Metro was on sale for like more than a year), I hope they’ll be able to carry on. They have a new website, a new office… I don’t think it will close down short term.

One good sign is that Judith Lussier is back as a columnist. I’m glad to see the trolls that drove her away didn’t do so permanently.

National Observer looks at the back history of SNC-Lavalin (with a litany of its past sins and penitences) with specific details on its activities in Libya. It’s a portrait of how capitalism and money have no conscience.
