The headline here implies the city will return to a renovated city hall with no crucifix in the council chamber, but the quote only promises a reflection on its future. Also from La Presse.
Chris
Lavigne-Lalonde seemed quite clear to me. It’s being removed and not returning. (Did you not listen to the video perhaps?)
Yay!
This should put pressure on the Ass Nat too I hope.
Kate
I am not able to watch the video at this time.

I think they confused the two completely secular statues of Jesus dying on the cross: the Montreal crucifix is coming down during renovations and not being put back up, while the historical and not at all religious National Assembly crucifix is now being “reflected upon”, ie kicked to a future government to deal with.
Kate
I am assured via Twitter by a councillor I know that the crucifix definitely won’t be back when council sessions resume at city hall after the renovations.
Chris
Kate, the Gazoo also has an article “National Assembly might follow Montreal in removing crucifix: Legault” and in it, regarding the Montreal one, it says “Opposition Leader Lionel Perez slammed the decision, saying the city should have held public consultations first.” Which I thought you’d enjoy. 🙂
Kate
Chris, it takes the internecine workings of city politics to make an observant Jew defend the placement of a crucifix!
Chris
He takes “the opposition’s job is to oppose” way to literally.

The city is hiking parking fines after a long period when they didn’t change much. Brief figures here show a considerable jump.
Ephraim
I wonder if there was a jump in the fine for parking in a handicapped zone. It went from $149 to $300 about 2 years ago. Wonder what it’s up to… and if it’s finally enough to get people to stop parking in them.
And please don’t be shy, if you see someone using the handicapped spot who doesn’t have a permit, call. If they are in the car, show them that you are going to call and gesture to the sign. There are people who really need those spaces… they can’t walk far, even if you can’t see the disability.
Ian
Maybe I read the article differently but to me it sounds like the actual fines are only going up a little bit, it’s the « frais de greffe » from the provincial government that is getting jacked.
I for one am looking forward to parking on alternate sides of the street twice a week starting next month for the street sweepers that come maybe once every 2 weeks at best… but hey, there’s a budget shortfall just to keep things exactly as they are, no improvement to services or anything, it’s practically my civic duty to get parking fines.
Martin
Ian, I don’t where you live, but on my street in Rosemont it’s only once a week and they are there on time every week like clockwork.
Ian
I’m impressed. Most of Mile End is left to get pretty skanky before they run the sweepers. I call 311 every time they don’t show up, I’m not going to passively accept risking a $64 ticket for interfering with a service that doesn’t even show up most of the time it’s scheduled.
Kate
Ian, keep calling. Where I live in Villeray it’s also like clockwork. My side of the street clears, and the sweeper shows up.

St-Henri, maybe the cleaner will miss once a year. It’s also once a week, different days for each side of the week.
Ian
Wow, I guess it really is just my area. I will definitely keep on top of it!

CBC notes thirty years since Joe Rose was murdered on a night bus for being a visibly gay man. Mildly curious here what became of his killers.
qatzelok
I knew Joe Rose because he was good friends with my room-mate in the late 80s.
I remember that he was wearing a black “AIDS: Silence = Death” t-shirt with his candy pink hair the night he took the all night bus (at around 4 am), and was killed on that bus in front of a traumatized bus driver near Frontenac metro station.
Ian
The Gazette had a very good article on Joe Rose & the evolution of the gay pride movement in Montreal that is well worth the read.

A successful petition against the Publi-Sac will force a public consultation over the distribution of the advertising bundle.

Good. I hope he never sees freedom again.
