Spotted on Facebook, a set of interesting photos of the old Children’s Hospital both outside and in.

Quebec is suing the promoters of the Grande Roue in the Old Port because they constructed the thing in a heritage area without a permit.

      And nobody noticed till now?

        Isn’t this federal land ?

      • Kate 19:21 on 2019-03-15 Permalink

Not all of it. The western end of the Old Port is federal, but I don’t think the feds control what’s east of St-Laurent, although the border may not be exactly there.

Somebody’s envelope wasn’t fat enough or somebody down the chain wasn’t paid. There’s no way this false outrage could be real, the thing got built over the space of any months, it wasn’t an overnight popup secret … The sheer incompetence evidenced by the lawsuit should be an embarrassment to all levels of government involved as it is clearly only happening because somebody wasn’t correctly bribed.

The city opposition and environmental groups are asking the feds for funds to keep the Biosphere museum open.

I don’t understand why they don’t just operate it themselves… it can’t be that expensive.

I’m concerned the Fed will try to make this an ‘attraction’, like every other square foot of Old Montreal/Old Port, and that’ll ruin it. It’s bad enough what;s happened to Parc Jean-Drapeau, I have a terrible feeling this will be sold to Guy Laliberté or made into a Barbie Museum or some other shit like that.

        • Ephraim 14:55 on 2019-03-15 Permalink

The Barbie Museum is private and run as a way to attract people to Les Cours Mont-Royal… which really has no other reason for people to go there…. since frankly when it was the Sheraton. Besides, how else are you going to see Divorce Barbie… you know, she comes with all of Ken’s stuff 🙂

The condo construction boom in town means dumps of construction trash on farmland off the island.

Stop allowing garbage to be removed by subcontractors, must be the builder. Set the fine 2x cost of removal plus 10% extra per day that the trash is untreated and the CEO/owner as personally responsible if the corporation doesn’t pay. Set a reward to the citizen reporting it (with video proof) of up to 30% of the fine collected. I bet the problem is solved the first time that someone reports it with proof.

        • Ian 12:17 on 2019-03-15 Permalink

Yeah right just like the fines against illegal AirBnBs. Rules only matter if they are enforced.

        • Ephraim 14:57 on 2019-03-15 Permalink

@Ian – Exactly, which is why you set up a enormous finder’s fee. Then you have people from environmental groups who will be running around trying to catch them for the finder’s fee. I don’t ever expect government to do it’s job without coercion.

Alot of homeowners have asbestos removed from their old pipes and attics by unlicensed yahoos in order to save some $$$. No doubt it ends up in veggie patches. I always make sure to report to environment ministry when I catch wind of such infractions. The inspectors pay them a visit within 48 hours!

        • steph 18:02 on 2019-03-15 Permalink

Finders fees don’t translate into enforcement. 30% of a 0$ fine is 0$. The government simply needs the will to enforce the rules they have.

        • Ephraim 12:49 on 2019-03-16 Permalink

Steph – If you make it in the law that the government has to pay them, even if they don’t enforce… they will enforce… they have to… it’s money out of their pocket otherwise. And with big numbers, people will enforce.

The city is $200 million short to cover the 2020 budget.

So that’s 4% of the 5.7 G$ budget, according to the article.

It seems like it’s almost every year the city reports it’s going to have a deficit, and almost every year it actually runs a surplus.

@Kevin – It looks goods at the polls.
