Jesus bus is legal
An evangelical church in St‑Léonard has paid to put placards on 100 STM buses saying Jésus t’aime, and this is apparently protected under the Canadian charter. The church has also been in the news for breaking sanitary laws.

Good on the STM for supporting free speech! They also allowed atheist ads years ago (unlike Vancouver and elsewhere).

Can’t see why these wouldn’t be allowed. I dislike a lot of advertising, but don’t think it should be illegal. (Of course, they don’t find all the religious street names and school names and stat holidays etc a problem, because hypocrisy, but so it goes.)

Yeah, I don’t see the big deal. I’m not religious, but I also don’t go around telling other people what to believe. A sign on a bus that says “Jésus t’aime” is no different (to me) than a sign that says “Fred Smith wants you to have a good day” or “Drink Coca-Cola.” It’s just a sign; an ad paid for by someone.

I thought the interesting angle was that they found some people who thought the laïcité law meant such things had been banned.

Kate, where is that angle? In the linked article the word occurs just once: “Si ces panneaux irritent certains qui y voient un accroc à la laïcité” but I don’t see that that referring to any law, more to the general concept of secularism.
Blork, re: “I’m not religious, but I also don’t go around telling other people what to believe.” That’s fine and all, but I’d like to note that there’s no conflict between trying to convince others what to believe and being fine with allowing others to try and convince you what to believe too.

The real question is if the STM would run an ad that says “Jesus hates you.”

I have absolutely no problem with their advertising. So which Jesus is this, the one from Mexico or the old Jewish guy who believed that people should spend their time and money on helping the poor and downtrodden and therefore shouldn’t really be spending money on advertising? Fishes and loaves and bus advertisements!
