Put the brakes on Royalmount: Urbanist
Another urbanist voice speaks out against the Royalmount project, now that the city has said it will do nothing to delay it.

It’s time to stop complaining about that project. Just let them do it. Elected officials and urbanists need to focus on our commercial street which are already struggling as we speak. Saint-Denis comes to mind among others. Therefor, put more energy on actual commercial streets and quality of life in neighborhoods rather than trying to block what other people want to do. Lower commercial rent for mom and pop businesses, make sure the sidewalks are not a huge skating rink, make more affordable housings available for families and elderlies, start taking action against all these air b n b that are taking appartments of the markets etc…

“rather than trying to block what other people want to do” -> and you then proceed to advocate against AirBnb, which is merely ‘what other people want to do’ with their property.
Consider that ‘what other people want to do’ affects yet other people and society needs to have an understanding and rules about what can and cannot be done when it affects others. There’s a good case against both AirBnb and Royalmount for this reason.

Also, how can you claim to be for mom and pop businesses on the traditional commercial streets while advocating for the type of development that draws people away from independent businesses?

This project is so bad I now want it. By all planning estimations it will cause gridlock on the most heavily trafficked intersection in the province, so thats a good thing. Because let’s be honest, that will be the only way to get individuals out of their cars… is if they are stationary.

Chris: The developper has a permit. A legit permit given by the municipality. On the other hand Air bnb doesn’t play by the same rules as other players. The same with renters who are renting appartments while their landlords are not even aware of it. Or landlords that are also not going by the city and provincial rules. If Air bnb gets all the necessary permits to operate such business and if they pay the taxes, insurances etc. like others, then I don’t mind at all. But it’s not the case.

Tell CAQ voters in Laval and neighbouring suburbs that not only will their commute be slow because of REM construction, but because of Royalmount too.
