Radio-Canada reminds us that the monthly STM pass is now $85 and some of the other passes have also gone up, but not the single ticket, which remains at $3.25.

Heat wave news as it comes:
Tweet says the four libraries in Sud-Ouest will be open Sunday till 8 pm, as an exception, to offer air conditioned space to people who need it, and opened all evenings this week till 8.
Once again, the city list of pools and water features and their extended hours. I’ve seen mentions that there were lineups for some pools Sunday.
Old Montreal’s calèches have not been on the road because it’s too hot for the horses.
Monday will be even hotter.
Tuesday morning from 7:45 till 9 is the Grand Splash off Jacques Cartier pier in the Old Port.

I’m seeing tweets that La Meute will be gathering at 1 pm in the atrium of 1000 de la Gauchetière, as well as antiracist and antifascist gatherings in response. Radio-Canada reports on the impending demonstrations but makes it 2 pm.
Update around 2:45: TVA tells the story that La Meute wanted to protest illegal immigration. People petitioning for refuge is not illegal immigration.
Meanwhile, CBC covers the Canada Day parade and CTV rather bitchily points out that Mayor Plante has taken the day off although she made appearances at some St-Jean festivities.
Update: Police kept the two protests well apart, so there’s very little news. I like Radio-Canada’s deadpan, factual description of the fascist performance: “Ils sont ensuite sortis de l’édifice du 1000 De La Gauchetière avant d’occuper la rue Saint-Antoine, en criant notamment « Vive La Meute » et « On est Storm », tout en imitant des hurlements de loup.”

In Maclean’s, some thoughts on the meaning of Dominion on Canada Day; a Globe & Mail editorial on why the founding of Canada as a nation was more admirable than the breakaway of the United States.
As for Mathieu Bock-Côté, his response would best be summed up as “$%#!!”

The Journal estimates that 68,000 people are moving house this weekend in Quebec, most of them in the Montreal area. In contrast, this CP piece in La Presse (and elsewhere) says as many as 250,000 people are on the move. Historical moving day photos from the Journal.
TVA has the inevitable report on abandoned pets this time of year. Bad enough that we abandon 600 animals a month normally, this ramps up to 1600 animals in June-July. The SPCA is speaking out for outlawing leases with no-pets clauses.

CTV says several performances of SLĀV have been cancelled because Betty Bonifassi has broken her ankle. That’s odd news to report like this: if she really has broken a bone it won’t get better in two days. And doesn’t this come at an almost incredibly convenient moment considering the widely reported negative response to the show?
