Serge Dessureault, captain of downtown fire station 19 and devoted mountaineer, has died Saturday morning trying to climb K2.

The CTV piece here and the CBC radio news I heard earlier both stressed that Dessureault was a skilled guy who “didn’t take any chances” – except, of course, for attempting to climb one of the most deadly peaks on the planet.

Heat waves can cause deaths even after they end. Five more people have died in Montreal from its effects, bringing the total in Montreal to 33.

The city morgue is full up right now after a week of heat wave and the facility is farming the surplus out to a funeral home.

Apparently a lot of the morgue spaces are taken up by, so to speak, permanent residents who haven’t been claimed. Shouldn’t there be a rule that after a certain period of time they will be disposed of?

Quebec is about to allow vanity licence plates and – you couldn’t make it up – the Parti québécois wants a rule that they can only be in French.
